Hi, My name is Toasterbath2, and I'm a teenager and a member of the autistic community. I also have ADHD. I would like to share my views on the show.
Firstly, as an autistic person, I found Sam difficult to relate to. There are tons of factors that contribute to that, but mainly
-Most autistic people aren't lucky enough to be diagnosed at age four like Sam is, especially if they're part of another marginalized community (people of color and those assigned female at birth are less likely to be diagnosed because almost all autism research has historically gone towards little white boys
-Robia Rashid is not autistic. Yes, her son is, but the only ones who are really able to comment on the autistic community are autistic people
-Kier Gilcrest is also not autistic. I'm sure Kier is a decent actor, but as an allistic person, he is incapable of accurately portraying an autistic character. (and autistic actors do exist, see Chloé Hayden, who is autistic and plays Quinni Gallagher-Jones, an autistic main character in the Heartbreak High reboot)
Next up, it's how the characters treat Sam. Elsa and Paige are the biggest culprits. Elsa is a classic "autism mom". Her whole personality centers around the fact that her kid (who is an adult, by the way) is autistic. You're not "strong" or a "superhero" for having an autistic child. That's just being a parent. And Paige? oh, don't get me started on Paige. the whole card system made me so upset. For an autistic person, sharing your special interests is sharing your soul. restricting the ability to do that makes it harder to relate to others, and show others that you relate to them
On the topic, the show always treats Sam like a burden to the allistics around him. Autistic people are not a burden. We're people. (that being said autism is intrinsic to who a person is. You cannot see the person without seeing the autism.)
This show is not made for autistic people. It's made for allistics to feel "woke" by watching it
